Let the Good Times Roll - Margaritaville @ the Beach

Is there anything more American than BBQ, casual beachside living, flip-flops, sea breezes, and sunsets? With that in mind, the Seaport Association is hosting a fundraiser, “Margaritaville on the Beach,” on Saturday, August 12, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Norwalk’s Calf Pasture Beach. For tickets to this event click here.

Let the Good Times Roll

Back in the day, BBQ’s were a family affair with plaid plastic tablecloths, homemade lemonade, and hotdogs and burgers on the grill. Today, this tradition has continued and evolved into a Saturday night bash with the Seaport Association that folks look forward to every year. “Gathering good friends and fans of the Sheffield Island Lighthouse for a party on the beach and alfresco dining is what summer is all about,” said Mike Reilly, President of the Seaport Association. “It gives people the chance to catch up with one another and to find out what the Seaport Association is all about in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.”

The grill is fired up for our BBQ

The center of every BBQ is the food, of course, and the Seaport Association with the help of Chef Clyde from of Ripka’s Beach CafĂ© has cooked up a menu that is incredibly delicious. The event will feature a variety of scrumptious dishes to please just about every palette with meat being the king of the grill along with a wide assortment of non-meat alternatives and veggies. Think of slow-cooked beef brisket, smoked pork shoulder, tasty BBQ chicken, oysters, fresh off the boat, corn on the cob, baked beans, zesty tomato salad, coleslaw, pizzas, focaccia, bruschetta, cookies, and watermelon…what a mouthwatering feast! There will be signature cocktails with two drink tickets per person as well as mocktails, and a cash bar.

Summer BBQ Seaport Style @ Calf Pasture Beach

An essential part of any beach BBQ is the right mix of music. This is where DJ Matt Zako comes in. Zako will be spinning tunes sure to get you up and dancing in the sand! Even though grilling, music, and mingling are the main events of the evening there will be an assortment of beach games like corn hole, giant Jenga, spike ball, and can jam to add to the fun.

Summer fun with friends old and new

A beautiful sunset, great food and drinks, seeing friends, and a lively DJ are all part of summer fun Seaport style. This event does require advance reservations and is limited to 125 people. Tickets are available online at seaport.org or by calling the Seaport Office at 203-838-9444, so get them today so you don’t miss out on the fun. Proceeds from this event will be used for the maintenance of Sheffield Island Lighthouse, Connecticut’s Maritime Icon.

Why Taking a Sunset Cruise with the Seaport Association Is A Good Idea

While most of us admire the sunset from the shoreline, taking in the sunset on the water is an extraordinary experience that can be done close to home, right in Norwalk, Connecticut.  It's nice to know that you can do something unique that is close by and easy to get to without planning a big fancy getaway. Imagine breathing in the fresh ocean air and feeling the tingle of the salt on your face as you slowly cruise past the islands situated right off the coast of Norwalk in Long Island Sound. There is a feeling of serenity watching seabirds glide as oystermen pull up their catch for the day as you cruise past Norwalk's necklace of islands.

Taking a two-hour sunset cruise with the Seaport Association through Norwalk Harbor is always a good idea because there is no better or more affordable way to experience Norwalk Harbor than on board the Seaport's vessel.

The two-hour sunset cruise is offered by the Seaport Association Wednesdays - Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through September 17th.  Passengers are encouraged to BYOB, plastic cups, openers, and snacks, to add to the fun. There is comfortable seating in a covered and uncovered deck area on the vessel that holds only 49 passengers, so it is never too crowded. For sunset cruise tickets go to http://www.seaport.org

After welcoming passengers aboard, the
journey begins as the vessel slowly wends its way through Norwalk Harbor, passing many islands. Some of them have idyllic names like Tavern Island, once owned by the famous Broadway playwright Billy Rose,
Chimmon Island, the largest island in the Norwalk Chain of Islands, and Shea Island, named in honor of native Pfc. Daniel Shea, Medal of Honor recipient for his bravery in the Vietnam War.

Highlights of the sunset cruise include passing Sheffield Island Lighthouse, built in 1868, and two rare sparkplug Lighthouses, Peck Ledge built in 1906, and Greens Ledge built in 1902. As the vessel returns to the dock, passengers watch as the city of Norwalk begins to light up, and just in time for dinner, with many restaurants steps away from the Seaport Dock.

Best of all, a sunset cruise is therapeutic because it reminds us that taking a break from the daily grind is a good thing to do. It gives passengers the opportunity
to soak up the last rays of the sun while reflecting on the accomplishments of the day, and everything that we have to be grateful for.

Sunset Cruise Schedule & Parking
The boat leaves from the dock on 4 North Water Street at 6:30 p.m., and returns at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday – Sunday evenings, June through September. The Seaport Dock is adjacent to the Stroffolino Bridge at the corner of Washington and North Water Streets. Parking is available in the adjacent lot or at the Maritime Center Parking Garage. For tickets visit http://www.seaport.org or call 203-838-9444. Sunset cruises are $35 per person. The boat sails promptly as scheduled so it is best to arrive at the dock 30 minutes before departure to facilitate the boarding process.

Sheffield Island – Picture Perfect & Picnic Ready

Family Fun on Sheffield Island

Many visitors comment on how beautifully the island is maintained and how it enhances the experience of visiting. There is a large timber frame pavilion with picnic tables that face the water, shell-strewn pathways through the Nature Preserve colorful island-inspired flowers and landscaping, an antique telescope; wildlife, marine life, ecosystem interpretative signage along the seawalls, and large shade trees, making it an ideal picnic spot.

Clambakes and picnics in our Pavilion

The volunteers of the Norwalk Seaport Association take great pride in cleaning up Sheffield Island each spring, making it picture-perfect for visitors. Linda Cappello, a Trustee on the Board of Trustees of the Norwalk Seaport Association organizes these spring pilgrimages annually. "It is my passion. I have cruised the waters of Long Island Sound and the Norwalk Islands for as long as I can remember. My father introduced me to the Sound when I was a child, and I have loved it ever since! If I could live on the Island I would! As for our volunteers, we always welcome help, just contact us. Being a Seaport Volunteer offers a unique reward unique for a good cause, especially if they have a love for Norwalk's maritime history and Long Island Sound,” Cappello concluded.

A big thank you to all our volunteers!

Island maintenance doesn't end in the spring. Throughout the summer season, there are many chores to attend to from mowing the lawn, to maintaining the shells on the pathways, and cleaning the lighthouse itself, to name a few of what it takes to keep the island ready for visitors.

Celebrate Long Island Sound's Bounty @ Docktails and Oysters June 3, 2023

Docktails and Oysters, a signature special fundraising event hosted by Norm Bloom and Sons, a fourth-generation oyster farm in Norwalk, on behalf of the Norwalk Seaport Association are back again this year, by popular demand on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event sells out every year, so it is important to get your tickets early as they are limited.

This island-inspired party will get you in an “aloha state of mind” as you see folks in brightly colored Hawaiian shirts, listening to live music, sipping cocktails, and slurping the freshest oysters you will ever taste! “It’s a chance for people to celebrate the Seaport Association’s mission of preserving the Sheffield Island Lighthouse for future generations and have a little fun at an authentic oyster farm,” said Mike Reilly, President of the Seaport Association.

Oysters have a long history in Norwalk that started with the Native Americans. Today, the techniques and processes used to farm Copps Island Oysters by Norm Bloom and Sons have been used for centuries, making them an extra special treat. If you have never had oysters, literally fresh off the boat this is your chance to eat your fill of them - so make sure you come hungry! It's fun to watch the pros shuck the oysters right before your eyes (they make it look so easy) and set them on trays with lemons and an assortment of delicious sauces. The food and fun doesn't stop there, as guests can snack on passed and tabled appetizers such as citrus grilled shrimp, house-smoked pork sliders, and blackened swordfish tacos with pineapple salsa, vegetable spring rolls, and black bean and corn salad, in keeping with the island vibe.

A highlight of the event is its location itself - the dock at Norm Bloom & Sons Copps Island Oysters, one of the few remaining traditional oyster farms in the United States. An added bonus is to learn how oysters are grown and harvested here and then shipped all over the world. The oyster beds are actually incubated under the dock where this event takes place. Part of the charm is to see how small oysters actually are when they start out! As soon as they are big enough, the oysters are "planted" on the sandy bottom of the Sound that surrounds the docks. This time-honored system of growing oysters makes them some of the best that you will ever taste, making it no surprise that Copps Island oysters are prized the world over for their sweet briny flavor and plump meat. Best of all, this is your chance to eat your fill of them for a good cause!

Tickets to this event are limited to 200 people and are $80 online and $90 at the gate if tickets are available. It is highly recommended to reserve your tickets in advance because this popular event sells out every year and there may not be tickets available the day of the event. For tickets click here, if you have questions, please call 203-838-9444.
